Sustainable management of marine resources


Recently, the international community has shown a strong concern about the sustainability of different fisheries around the world. Several factors can explain why some important fisheries are nowadays in a precarious situation: the overexploitation (suffered, for instance, by Chilean fisheries during last decades), the vulnerability of some particular species (for instance, deep water fishes such as Chilean sea bass, Orange Roughy, Alfonsino, etc.), the impact of climatic factors (which has a strong impact in some small pelagic species such as Chilean Jack Mackerel and Anchovy in the Pacific-South Hemisphere), among others. Mathematical modeling can provide rigorous and new points of view that can contribute to the making decision processes related to these problems.

An approach to operationalize sustainability definitions allowing to compute trade-off between different objectives (e.g., biological v/s production) and to propose recovery programs for overexploited fisheries are topics studied in our group.
